What is the Entry Level Writing Requirement? (Formerly the Subject A Requirement). The University of California requires all undergraduate students (including international students) to demonstrate a minimum proficiency in English composition. This is called the " Entry Level Writing Requirement." Test results that satisfy the Entry Level Requirement include: * A score of 680 or higher on the SAT Reasoning Test (writing) ; * A score of 30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; * a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the CEEB Advanced Placement Test in English; *A score of 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Language A exam; *A score of 6 or higher on the International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A exam; * submitting proof of completion of a transfer-level college course of four quarter-units or three semester-units in English composition with a grade of C or better; *writing a passing essay on the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (which is required of all students who have not otherwise met the requirement). This examination may be taken only once. If you do not pass the Entry Level Writing Requirement, you will need to demonstrate a minimum proficiency in composition through course work. You can do this by enrolling in SDCC 1 during your first quarter of residence at UCSD, or as soon thereafter as space is available in the course. SDCC 1 is a Mesa College course taught at UCSD as part of a cooperative program with the San Diego Community College District. You must pass an examination at the end of the course to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement. You will not be allowed to enroll in university-level writing courses at UCSD until you fulfill the Entry Level Writing Requirement. Under current Academic
Senate regulations, SDCC 1 cannot be counted towards the graduation
requirements. The course units do count as workload credit towards
the miminum progress requirement and eligibility for financial
assistance. |
