The Appeals Process
If you should fail the
Basic Writing course or the Exit Exam that concludes it, the University
will review your results, and overturn any that appear not to
reflect accurately your skills as a writer.
To set this review in
motion, download an appeal form and instructions. After
completing the form, bring to the Basic Writing office (232 Literature
Building) the portfolio of your written work produced during the
quarter. This portfolio must include all the papers you wrote in the
Basic Writing course; these papers must be the original copies handed in
to your instructor, not newly edited versions.
Appeal results will be
mailed to you the following week.
If your review is
favorable, it will be up to you to see if you can be admitted to a
section of your college's writing course. If your review is
unfavorable, you will need to sign up for Basic Writing immediately.
Bear in mind that relatively few appeals are usually sustained. The
mere fact of turning in your portfolio does not mean you can assume
success in the appeal process.
For students who have
attempted Basic Writing three times and still not passed, there is the
possibility of another appeal process. If you have received word
that the appeal of your third-quarter Basic Writing result has been
denied, immeditely see the academic advisor at your college who
handles Basic Writing matters.
